DuPont’s biomaterial innovations to impact polyester fiber market

DuPont, one of the globally renowned participants in polymers and advanced materials market, is reportedly all set to introduce a range of innovative biomaterials, as stated by the one of company’s profound leaders. As per sources, the Global Business Director of DuPont Biomaterials, Dr. Michael Saltzberg, Ph.D, had participated in The Future of Materials Summit event of this year, and had apparently stated that the company has plans of launching state-of-the-art innovations in the materials domain.

For the record, The Future of Materials Summit took place in Luxembourg this week, and witnessed Dr. Saltzberg conferring with myriad other business leaders with regards to the ‘Best Practices for New Materials’ Development’. Amidst an important debate, Dr. Saltzberg, who spearheads the division that develops renewably sourced materials, affirmed that DuPont is indeed planning to manufacture and commercialize plant-based biomaterials, polymers, and biochemicals rather than the ones based on petroleum.

As per reports, one of DuPont’s early biomaterial innovations is ‘Sorona’, a patented polymer that incorporates one of DuPont’s bio-based material ingredients, the Bio-PDO propanediol. Reportedly, DuPont’s Sorona, when launched in 2000, created quite a storm in polyester fiber industry, given that the polymer is a highly sustainable solution for manufacturing fibers with superior performance.

Additionally, it has also been reported that last year, DuPont partnered with ADM (Archer Daniels Midland Company) for manufacturing FDME (Furan Dicarboxylic Methyl Ester) – a bio-based monomer, from renewable feedstock. The company, right now, is in the process of developing polytrimethylene furandicarboxylate (PTF) by combining Bio-PDO and FDME, that would further influence polymers and advanced materials market trends, given that PTF is 100% renewable and possesses superior gas-barrier properties.

Dr Saltzberg apparently claims that the DuPont’s biomaterials team has been striving to ready target markets for recycled materials. DuPont incidentally, has also partnered with Unifi to manufacture high-performance, renewable fabric insulation developed from Sorona and other recycled materials. Experts cite that this alliance would bring forth another transformation in polyester fiber market, as leading apparel brands look out for sustainable options for their winter wardrobe collection.
