Long Beach train depot destroyed by fire

Crews Friday extinguished a blaze that erupted at an abandoned location in Long Beach.

The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of California Ave near 27th Street, according to firefighters.

Upon their arrival, authorities located the building fully engulfed in flames.

It took firefighters 25 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Since the depot’s completion in 1907, it has been moved twice and has served as everything from a railroad depot to a chemical testing facility to city offices. The Spanish-inspired architecture is similar to many depots built around the turn of the last century.
“The building was a great piece to interpret a time in American history that doesn’t exist,” Katie Rispoli Keaotamai said. “It’s a beautiful building with so much to tell.”

No injuries were reported.

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the large blaze.
