Vineyard Wind appoints MHI Vestas as the supplier for its wind project

Vineyard Wind has recently announced that it has appointed MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as the supplier for its offshore wind project. Reportedly, this project, which is set to be the first utility-scale offshore project in the United States, will include the MHI Vestas’ V164-9.5 MW offshore wind turbine.

It has been reported that the offshore wind farm project will include 84 units of V164-9.5 MW offshore wind turbine – which MHI Vestas claims to be the world’s most powerful. Vineyard Wind will further continue to expand through the sanctioning process toward the onset of wind farms construction from 2019.

For those uninitiated, Vineyard Wind is the 800-megawatts project south of Martha’s Vineyard located in the state of Massachusetts. It is moreover an equal joint venture between the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Avangrid. MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is also a 50-50 joint venture between the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Vestas Wind Systems.

As reported by the Windpower, on Vineyard Wind project coming online, it is estimated to cut Massachusetts’ carbon emission by over 1.6 million tons every year, which is equivalent to removing 325,000 cars from state roads. It is also expected to offer USD 3.7 billion in energy savings to the region over the life of the project.

Philippe Kavafyan, CEO, MHI Vestas was quoted saying that the company is pleased to have become the supplier of the United States’ first large-scale offshore wind farm. He further added that the team is looking forward to collaborate with Vineyard Wind and help them achieve the desired climate targets, while bringing clean energy jobs to the region.

Vineyard Wind’s CEO Lars Pedersen revealed that MHI Vestas with its affordable and sustainable energy solutions shares the same level of commitment toward reducing Massachusetts carbon emission and is poised to benefit the future generations by driving cost of energy through reliable wind-turbine technology.
